Finding The Right Piano Study Technique
Learning to play the piano can be trying at times. It doesn't matter if you are just starting out, or if you have played for years, sometimes it feels like you just aren't getting anywhere at all. And, no matter how long you sit and study and play the piano, you are bombarded with the old adage "Practice makes perfect". But, how can you study the piano if you aren't really sure what you're supposed to be doing? Well, every good piano player should know that studying the piano is more than just practicing. Studying the piano involves playing all different works to help your fingers continually train and stretch, reading through music and understanding every work before you master it, how long you can practice, and how well you can use your study time.

Every piano player needs to find the study technique(s) that will help them to learn better and faster, and usually it's trial and error that will point this out to you. Some piano instructors will help you find the right study technique by giving you several tips and ideas that helped them, while others will simply tell you to "go home and practice". But, if you are not playing correctly while you are practicing, you are simply defeating the whole purpose of practice. So, how do you know what to do when studying the piano?

Study Techniques To Help You Improve

While there are millions of ways to study the piano, there are some techniques that will always provide help to any player, new or old:

Make sure that your practice area is free of all distractions, such as the television, phone, loud music, and even other people if needed. Having a quiet place to read, study, and practice can help you more than anything while you are learning.

Read through your music or assignment. Every piano instructor will either assign you or show you some great practice suggestions for your study at home. There is a reason for these, and you should always do any practice pieces at home when you can.

Study and practice the piano every day. No matter if you can only set aside thirty minutes per day to study, you need to be sure that you are practicing each day. Once you have your study time down, you should continue to study at that same time, every day.

When you sit down to practice, make sure that the sheet music is easy for you to read and that you have enough light to see it. There is no need to strain your eyes or try to play something that you can't read.

When you are working on learning a long piece, don't try to cram it all in at one study session. You should break it up into smaller pieces and learn each of them in order so you will be prepared and ready to play the whole thing through.

As you break down each section in the piece, you should play through them slowly at first, making sure that each note, pitch, melody, tune, and rhythm is right and in the right spot. There is no need to study that piece if you play the same mistakes over and over. By practicing each work correctly, and slowly, for a few times, you're fingers will know where to go and what to do when they get there.

When you have a good study session, you should reward yourself by playing something that you already know and love after something new and hard. By playing something that you are already good at, you will bolster your self esteem and let you know that you are a good piano player, and practice will have you playing this new, hard piece in no time too.

You should take your teacher's suggestions and tips home with you. By using their advice, you will find all sorts of new avenues of study and play that you didn't know before. After all, it took them years of practice and study to get where they are, so they have done something right!

Find a musical dictionary. This will help you study your pieces the right way by telling you what each Italian term on your music means, such as Allegro vivace, so you don't get confused while practicing or playing. Knowing what the original composer meant and wanted that particular line to sound like will help you become a better player.

Experiment. Use different study techniques until you find some that work for you. Everyone has different ways of learning, whether it's by reading all about the piano and the work that you are trying to learn, or whether it's sitting down and playing it over and over until you get it right and can play it in your sleep, each different piano player will have to experiment to find that perfect study technique for them.

Listen, Learn, and Play

While you are in class, you should always listen to your piano instructor. This means that you should soak in everything you possibly can, from new techniques that you need to master to where the next good piano concert will be and when. By knowing new techniques that you can use, you will find that you'll be able to get these new techniques into your routine and help you on the road to becoming a better piano player. By attending some of the better piano concerts around your area, you will have time to study each different piano player and see how they play, read, study, and much more. When you are able to watch the better piano players, you will become better as well, as you should learn something from each different performance.

Once you have found a few new techniques for studying the piano, you can take them all home and try them out on your instrument. Make sure that you either memorize the techniques or that you write them down before you stop your practice for the day. By memorizing or writing down the new technique that you have learned that day, you are less likely to forget it the next morning.

The Mind of a Serial Killer
Have you ever wondered what motivates a serial killer? How safe is the area you live in? How well do you know your neighbor? Who are you shaking hands with everyday? TV has more than just one show about serial killers and we love to watch these shows! Silence of The Lambs does have some important revelations, that should not be discarded! The hunter seeking its prey, is very good at blending in and controlling just how much is revealed.

Criminal Minds, Csi, Csi Miami, Csi New York, Law and Order, and I have not named them all! Are we learning more about the mind of a serial killer? What intrigues you about the mind of a serial killer? Are we more aware of our surroundings? What really protects you from the mind of a serial killer? I ask these questions, because they deserve an answer and your reading this because your drawn into it!

These shows focus not on just some rapist, but most of the time on an intelligent killer, who slips through the cracks of society unseen. How does this person stay unseen? It is called, "Perfect Camouflage". One that can adapt to any situation and leave with a powerful presence of being liked. The dateline mystery tv show is frustrating to watch because cops botch up the crime seen! Who does the crime scenes as good as a csi TV show? Look at the families in court that watch a killer go free, because the evidence is lacking!

Think about a cold calculated killer and you can watch the show "Numbers!" Is it all about numbers or timing? Is it the sheer joy of making the kill, that no one can figure out, except Sherlock Holmes! Who is next? Everyday we walk out the door we don't know what will happen, but we know that a positive attitude gets us through. Am I right? When a person is home alone, the desires begin to fester and the thoughts of, "what if" manifest themselves.

Is it crazy for someone to write serial killers and get to know them? Is it insane for women to write them in prison and later on get married? Has parts of humanity come to the point of saying, "is this all there is?" One man who killed 48 people in Seattle Washington, stated that he wanted to do it! That was his motivation, while millions asked, "why?". Let's look back in time and look at Alexander The Great, Napoleon, Vladimir The Impaler.

How can a civilized community be threated by someone that has lost a few screws?

Out of all the millions what makes anyone so special? Is it being loved? Wanting to be loved? Being remembered and enshrined! Some of the serial killers, actually started killing animals and then evolved into killing people. It seems that some were going through a nurturing process and turned into what many call a mass of hideous monsters.

Ed Gein wanted mother's attention and had needs that were never quite fullfilled. Buffalo Bill also got in touch with his feminine side, which lead to the torture and death of many young women in, "Silence of The Lambs". Is the serial killer trying to figure himself out by pushing some limits? Is the serial killer finding out what pleases him/her the most? Does the killer like seeing his/her name in the news papers? Is the serial killer a collector of some trophies of his/her great conquest?

How much does being in control play in this insane senario? Control does seem to be an important factor and leaving an unhappy existence may be enticing for the killer. The show, "Super Natural" is on the trail of fighting evil, but they have to do some killing on the way. Staying in control of ones emotions and focused on the task at hand, does bring some pleasure. Or it seems to be on the show, "Super Natural". We all have wants and needs, but what happens when we start to lose control?

Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Wayne Gacy and Ed Gein had something in common. They became well known and enshrined by a society that wants to know more, and TV will seek to meet that need. Every night of the week, we sit mesmerized in front of the TV and wait for that next clue. As Robert Stack used to say on Unsolved Mysteries, "Will you be the next missing piece, in solving this puzzle?"

If you have read books such as "Silent Prey", you may have heard that blood smells like copper. Horror writers need that descriptive detail to pull you into the moment! Is Stephen King ready for his own nightmare? The thrill of trying to understand that point of which we are not to enter. That dark place we are not to go, because if we do, there is no going back! American TV shows delve into this dark unseen world, and the ratings rise through the roof! Where will this lead?

Quantum Leap (Season 1) DVD Review
Despite its short run (March 1989 - May 1993), Quantum Leap is nevertheless one of the more memorable dramatic series in television history. Although the show borrows from a concept employed in other realms, such as Highway To Heaven (with its theme of a mysterious force interceding to transform a single life), it adds a unique twist by utilizing elements of science fiction. Created by Donald P. Bellisario (creator of Magnum, P.I., JAG, and countless other hit shows), Quantum Leap developed a loyal cult following, making its short network run all the more difficult to understand

Quantum Leap stars Scott Bakula as Dr. Samuel "Sam" Beckett, a cutting-edge experimental researcher in the field of physics. Developing a theory that an individual can travel throughout the span of his life, Beckett builds the Quantum Leap Accelerator and uses himself as the test subject. But rather than traveling within his own lifetime, Beckett finds himself mysteriously transported into the lives of various individuals, each of whom faces a problem Beckett must rectify (thus changing history for the better). When he does, he can make his next "quantum leap" (which he hopes will restore him to his pre-experiment self). Aiding Beckett on his various missions is Rear Admiral Albert "Al" Calavicci (Dean Stockwell), one of the quantum leap experiment observers who periodically appears as a hologram in order to communicate with Beckett. With each new episode, Beckett finds himself in a new body, facing new circumstances, with a new mission he must decipher and complete if he ever hopes to return home

The Quantum Leap DVD (Season 1) features a number of action-packed episodes including the series premiere "Genesis" in which the audience first learns of Project Quantum Leap (PQL) and witnesses Dr. Beckett's leap into the particle accelerator. Beckett is transported into the body of an Air Force test pilot and a minor league baseball player, learning from Al's hologram what he must do with each man's life. The episode ends with Beckett transported into the body of a school teacher right in the middle of class Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "Star-Crossed" in which Sam prevents a college co-ed from ruining her life while giving her professor a second chance at making his marriage work, and "The Color of Truth" in which Sam is transported into the life of a black chauffeur in 1955, where he faces the virulent affects of discrimination and racism

Below is a list of episodes included on the Quantum Leap DVD:

The Magic of Harry Potter Films
What's up with these Harry Potter films anyway? It is absolutely amazing the effect that these movies have on some of their fans. Have you seen the first four? Well, if the answer is no, then you're certainly in the minority. The amazing thing is that both kids and adults alike seemed to equally love the adventures of the young wizard.

As a matter of fact, the Harry Potter films alone have made J.K. Rowling a very, very wealthy woman. There's just something about wizards and supernatural evils that gets our juices flowing. I suppose it's the mystery and magic of it all. I know two things for sure, this movie series will be around for a long time, and lots of money will be generated from them. Harry Potter films are similar to a new-age Star Wars. It's that kind of phenomenon.

It all began if one single book. We humans seem to love our works of fiction. Or perhaps in this case, fantasy. Either way, the Harry Potter series is a runaway smash hit. When the first book hit the shelves of every bookstore around the world, I actually didn't really care for its. Yippy, yet another children's novel that delves into the supernatural realm of magic and the age old good versus evil genre. Like that hasn't been done to death already. But kids from all over the world were new to these concepts and this in turn got the adult's attention as well.

Because of the wild enthusiasm that the kids work is flying, the adults too were getting sucked into these imaginative books. The writing was on the wall that we would soon see feature films created. While I did see the first four, they didn't really excite me as much as I had hoped. But that's just me, my daughter absolutely adores them. I must admit, the concept of the Harry Potter films is the perfect key to classic escapism. Isn't that why we go to the movie theaters, as an escape from our everyday lives. Come on, you want to get your money's worth and there's a lot to be said for vicarious thrills.

If you're not an avid reader you may want to simply watch the Harry Potter films. In my opinion, the third and fourth installments or more entertaining than the first two. Of course this is just my opinion, but the way cinematography was much better. The Internet also provides any fan of the Harry Potter films with a plethora of material. You can hop online and pick up any of the first four Harry Potter films today on DVD for a decent price. Amazon.com is a superstore or you can find any of these films and can buy them either new or used.

To Tour Or Not To TourThat Is The Question!
Its every musicians fantasy. The tour bus rolls up to the arena (full of groupies, beer and pizza). Fans are crowded out front hoping to catch a glimpse of Americas hottest band. The group is escorted to their dressing room (full of more groupies, beer and pizza). They enjoy the various pleasures of stardom while roadies set up the stage. Its show time. The artists take the stage. The crowd is screaming. The lights are glaring. The amps are humming. The drummer clicks off the first song and

You wake up in the back of your PT Cruiser. Your bass players elbow is in your ear and the drummers asleep on your foot. Youve eaten nothing for the last week but corn dogs and frozen burritos. This is not the tour you imagined. This is not your Lilith Faire. This is not your Lollapalooza. This is not your Warped Tour. This...sucks.

Every musician dreams of touring. Getting out of their same boring town. Trying their tunes out on new crowds, in new areas, for fresh faces. Bonding on road, writing new tunes in the motel room, free food, free drinks, getting paid, getting laidliving the life.

But the music biz is full of touring horror stories. Bands stuck on the road with no money to come home. Musicians not eating for days. Clubs canceling gigs the night of with no warning. Negative reactions from bar patrons and local bands. The list goes on.

So, how do you make sure that your touring experience is a positive one? What can you, as musicians do, to eliminate potentially negative experiences and create positive ones.

The following are a few tips that add success to your touring experience:

1.) Dont Plan A Tour Because Youre Unhappy At Home---Just as an affair will not fix the problems in a marriage, a tour is not the cure for: problems within the band, problems in the band members lives, or a general malaise for your local scene. A tour is strain and stress and loads of work. You should be excited, and enthusiastic and positive when planning.

2.) Over Prepare Before You Leave---You can never plan too much or take too many precautions. At home is the time to rethink ever scenario and arrange accordingly. Get the van tuned up. Pack extra emergency money. Bring a list of additional clubs in the area in case your gigs fall through. Pack extra strings and sticks. Bring a backup guitar. Pack extra merchandise. Bring emergency food/water. Pack extra batteries and power cords. Bring cell phones.

3.) Be Humble And Thankful---Youre in a strange town and a new club, act like a guest. Nothing ticks off a club owner/promoter whos taken a chance on an unknown band more than out-of-towners swaggering into a club like Paris Hilton in an episode of The Simple Life. No matter how cool you are in your own town, this is unproven ground and your first impression is important. Ask, dont demand. Set up quickly. Play at an appropriate volume. Clean up after yourselves. Be friendly and courteous. Say please and thank you. Unless youre booking in Jerkville USA, this positive attitude could set you well on your way to a repeat booking with better perks and more local support.

4.) Seize Every Opportunity---If youre going to take the time away from work, family, and the buzz youve built in your own music community to head out into the great beyond and conquer unknown landsyou might as well come back with something other than lovely memories and an out-of-state parking ticket. Youre in a new place and the possibilities are endless. Sell CDs. Sell T-shirts. Get new names on your mailing list. Solicit local reviews, interviews, and radio. Introduce yourself to other club owners for future bookings. Find out who books local festivals. Play an impromptu house party after your gig. Make new friends that can street team for you next time. Think of something I havent even written here and do it!

Dont Expect To Conquer The World In One Tour---Rome wasnt built in a day and neither will your touring empire be. Have fun. Enjoy each trip and using it as a building block to make each tour to that particular place better and more elaborate. Play your cards right, and after a few trips you may be making terrific money, have secured lodging (either new friends let you crash or a club pays for a motel), get food and drinks comped, and guaranteed press and radio coverage.

In short, touring can be the best thing that ever happened to your band if you work hard, play it smart, and follow through correctly. But no matter how much you love to tour, always remember to keep your foot in the door locally. Its the great work that you do at home that makes other clubs excited about you bringing your show to their town.

The King of Queens (Season 2) DVD Review
A spin-off of the popular TV series Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens first hit the airwaves in the Fall of 1998. The show follows the life of Doug Heffernan (played by comedian Kevin James), a package delivery man for IPS (far different from UPS for you litigious-minded readers out there), and the show utilizes much of the same marital and relationship humor found in Ray Romano's blockbuster sitcom. With seven successful seasons under its belt, and even more yet to come, King of Queens is a hilarious comedy series well worth one's time and attention

King of Queens revolves around the life of Doug Heffernan, a hard-working, sports-loving parcel delivery man living in Queens, New York. In his thirties, and married to a lovely woman named Carrie (Leah Remini - who played Carla's daughter on the hit show Cheers), Doug spends most of his non-working hours basking in the glow of his state-of-the-art 70-inch TV with two buddies who share his fanatical love of sports, Spence (Patton Oswalt) and Deacon (Victor Williams). But Doug's personal paradise suffers a devastating blow when Carrie's widowed father Arthur (Jerry Stiller of Seinfeld fame) moves in with the couple. Doug's TV fantasy room is converted into an in-law suite, and after several failed relocation attempts, the TV is pushed into the garage Now Doug and Carrie must learn to share their palace with an eccentric, and oftentimes annoying, father/father-in-law with a penchant for messing up the couple's well-grounded routine

The King of Queens (Season 2) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "Queasy Rider" in which Doug buys a motorcycle, clearly violating Carrie's stated wishes. As part of a plan to get Doug to sell the motorcycle, Carrie takes up smoking, telling Doug that she'll give up cigarettes when he gives up the bike. But when Doug sells the bike, Carrie's guilt causes her to buy it back, resulting in some unintended consequences Other notable episodes from Season 2 include "Parent Trapped" in which Deacon and his wife Kelly ask Doug and Carrie to be the godparents of their newborn (they decline, but then regret doing so), and "Net Prophets" in which Doug and Carrie invest their Christmas bonus in the stock of an online company they know little about

Electric Guitar Set Up: How to Maximize Your Guitar's Performance
Like any precision instrument guitars will perform their best when they are properly set up. By setting up your guitar properly you can maximize your guitars potential and also customize how it will feel, play, and sound to your liking. There are some adjustments that are best left to a professional but you can do a lot yourself with just a few simple tools. Here are 3 easy steps you can take to adjust your guitars action, intonation, and pickup output.

The action of a guitar refers to how easy it is to fret (push down on) the strings. A guitar set up with good action will play effortlessly. The easiest way to affect the action of a guitar is by adjusting the string height at the bridge. Most electric guitars will have an adjustable bridge to allow this. Most guitar bridges will have either a hand-turned bridge height adjustment knob (like on Les Paul type guitars) or a hex-wrench driven mechanism (like most Strat-type guitars). Simply turn the screws to lower the string height. The goal is to go as low as you can before the strings start to buzz meaning they are resting on a the fret wire. There are some instances where you may want a higher string height, for example if you play slide guitar, but in general the lower the better. Other adjustments that affect string height and action such as height at the nut, neck angle, and truss rod adjustments may be better left for the professional.

Intonation of a guitar refers to the relationship of the frets to the precise string length. A guitar that is intonated correctly will sound in-tune at all neck positions. Poorly intonated guitars will sound ok at one neck position, but will sound out-of-tune at other neck positions. The length of a guitar string from nut to bridge needs to be exactly bisected at the 12th fret. In other words the 12th fret must divide the string exactly in half. Here the adjustable bridge comes into play again. Most bridges will have individual saddles for each string that can be moved to adjust intonation. Moving the string saddle, in effect, changes the length of the string. You will need a good electronic tuner to adjust your intonation. The goal here is to precisely match the tone of the fretted 12th string to the tone of the 12th string natural harmonic. A natural harmonic tone is achieved by only lightly putting your finger over the fret wire (the 12th in this instance) and picking the string normally. Natural harmonics will ring like a chime. They are easier to hear when the guitar is plugged into an amp and even easier when using the overdrive channel of your amp. Use your tuner to match the tone of the 12th string harmonic to the fretted 12th string tone by incrementally moving the string saddle one way or the other. Do this for each individual string, and your guitar will be intonated.

Pickup output can greatly be affected by the proximity of the pickup to the string. The easiest way to adjust this is by adjusting the pickup height. The closer the pickup is to the string the higher the output. Most pickups will have a height adjustment screw on either side of the pickup housing. Simply turn it to raise and lower the pickup. Fret the strings at the highest possible fret and raise the pickup so that its about 1/8 from the string. This should produce a good high output sound. From here you can customize your sound by either raising or lowering the high E or low E side of the pickup to enhance or subdue the treble or bass response. Make sure that you match the output between all of your pickups so that you wont get a big volume change when you change pickups.

With these tips your should be able to improve and customize your guitar and maximize the its performance. Remember that a properly set up guitar has a great impact on how it will play. It can be the difference between a guitar that plays good or one that plays great.
